Welcome to the Park City Youth Lacrosse Organization (PCYLO).
If your child is new to lacrosse—or new to our program—you’re in the right place. This page is designed to help parents understand what lacrosse is all about, what to expect during the season, and how our program supports young athletes at every stage.
Our philosophy is simple and consistent across all age groups:
Work Hard. Have Fun. Respect the Game.
What Is Lacrosse?
Lacrosse is a fast-paced team sport played with a stick and ball. Players pass, catch, and carry the ball while working together to score goals and defend their side of the field. The game combines elements of soccer, basketball, and hockey, encouraging constant movement, teamwork, and decision-making.
At the youth level, lacrosse is taught progressively. Rules, field size, and pace are all adjusted by age so players can learn the game safely and confidently.
Who Can Play?
Lacrosse at PCYLO is open to:
First-time players
Returning players
Multi-sport athletes
Boys and girls
No prior experience is required. Many players pick up a lacrosse stick for the first time at their first practice. Our recreational focus ensures every child has the opportunity to learn, improve, and enjoy the game.
What Does a Typical Season Look Like?
The main Lacrosse season is in the Spring, with age-appropriate schedules designed for families. However PCYLO also has opportunities to play Lacrosse in the Fall.
While exact details vary by age group, most teams follow a structure similar to:
Practices: 2-3 times per week
Games: Typically on weekends
Location: Local and regional fields
Coaches emphasize skill development, teamwork, and effort rather than wins and losses. Playing time and instruction are structured to support learning and confidence, especially for new players.
What Will My Child Learn?
Lacrosse teaches far more than just sport-specific skills. Players develop:
Fundamental lacrosse skills (throwing, catching, ground balls, defense)
Teamwork and communication
Sportsmanship and respect for teammates, opponents, and officials
Confidence, discipline, and resilience
An understanding of rules and fair play
Our goal is to help players grow both on and off the field.
Is Lacrosse Safe?
Lacrosse is a contact sport, but safety is a top priority at every level of our program.
We ensure safety through:
Required protective equipment
Age-appropriate rules and field sizes
Emphasis on proper technique and controlled play
Coaches who teach safety, positioning, and respect for others
As players develop skills and awareness, they learn how to play the game responsibly and confidently.
Equipment Basics
Every player needs basic lacrosse equipment to participate. Requirements vary slightly by age and gender, but typically include:
A lacrosse stick
Helmet and protective gear
Mouthguard
- Cleats
New families do not need to be experts before purchasing equipment. Coaches and league resources are available to help guide you toward appropriate, beginner-friendly options.
(A detailed breakdown is available on our Equipment Checklist page.)
Our Coaching Philosophy
Our coaches focus on creating a positive, structured environment where players can learn and grow.
You can expect coaches to:
Teach fundamentals and game understanding
Encourage effort, improvement, and teamwork
Be patient with new players
Provide equal opportunities to learn and participate
All coaching aligns with our core values and supports a fun, respectful experience for every athlete.
How Parents Can Support New Players
Parents play an important role in a positive lacrosse experience. We encourage families to:
Support effort and improvement over outcomes
Reinforce respect for coaches, teammates, officials, and opponents
Keep sideline behavior positive and encouraging
Help players practice simple skills at home when possible
Most importantly, help your child enjoy the process of learning a new sport.
